by the way 有两层意思：

1、在途中的路边上。 例如： stop for a picnic by the way(在途中停在路边野餐）
2、在主要话题或交谈中用以插入题外的话或问题，可翻译为“顺便...”等。 例如：Oh,by the way ,there is a telephone message fo-r you .(哦，对了，你有一个电话口信）

所以以此看来，你说的那个句子是可以这样翻译的，它用到的意思应该属于第一种用法，意译过来就可以啦。
