Well, it is very difficult to say. I heard before that there are thousands of them. Sometimes the case is, even people in two places speak the same dialect, there might be great differences in their pronouciation and stress, etc. In that case, can we say that there are two dialects involved?

In my homecity, people in different towns may speak different dialects too. So it is really hard to confirm how many dialects there are in China.

there are so many chinese dialects that it's difficult to tell
for example , I am in ZHEJIANG province ,just in my city there are many different type of dialects that even different town citizen have to communicate with PU TONG HUA
